A science-fiction novel about the Sun

Its plot starts off when two junior secondary school kids get a bad note in an astronomy test dealing with the Sun. The kids will discover the charming story of our Star being helped by an alien and by one of the kids’ mother, a famous astronomer.

They will have to resist the attacks of a gang of peers, whose leader, an unscrupulous scientist, wants to usurp the scientific discoveries of the astronomer mum and, above all, to kidnap the alien.

The Sun is  the main character of the novel directly, as well as the sun has been the main topic during the astronomy lessons. In the description of a dream, also the most famous mythical personifications of the sun appear.

Our pupils know the solar instruments present in our school astronomical lab and they have studied the most sophisticated equipment on specialized text books: this equipment appears in the novel,  in the description of astronomical instruments made by the astronomer mum in her study.

The Sun  is also the indirect protagonist of the story through windows, pictures, drawings and scientific cards (following the outline of Lucy and Stephen Hawking’s novel George's Secret Key to the Universe, which our pupils read in its Italian version).

The message: Imagination and science, escapist literature and scientific literature don’t clash: creative writing along with scientific rigour can produce texts which are enjoyable both from a literary and from a scientific point of view.

The writing method

-           Applying the knowledge acquired during an experimental course of astronomy;

-           Researching reference material on text books and on the internet;

-           Common working out of the plot;

-           Forming groups which draw up single chapters of the novel;

-           Common reading out of the completed chapters;

-           Forming larger groups in order to adjust the aim, to arrange the development of the plot, the description of the characters, etc.

Si tratta di un romanzo fantascientifico: la storia prende l’avvio da un cattivo voto preso in astronomia e vede protagonisti due ragazzini della scuola media, che scoprono l’affascinante storia della nostra stella, aiutati da un extraterrestre e dalla mamma di uno di loro, famosa astronoma. Dovranno difendersi da una banda di coetanei, capeggiata da uno scienziato privo di scrupoli che vuole appropriarsi delle scoperte astronomiche della dottoressa e rapire l’extraterrestre.

       Il Sole e il cosmo entrano nel romanzo direttamente  nella narrazione  e indirettamente attraverso “finestre scientifiche” contenenti immagini, disegni e schede.

Il messaggio che in questo modo vogliamo comunicare e’ che la fantasia e la scienza, la letteratura d’evasione e la letteratura scientifica non sono contrapposte: la scrittura creativa e il rigore scientifico possono generare testi godibili sia dal punto di vista letterario che scientifico.

Il metodo di lavoro prevede varie fasi ed aspetti:

•          applicazione delle conoscenze acquisite in un corso sperimentale di astronomia

•          ricerca materiali e informazioni attraverso testi cartacei e internet

•          elaborazione comune della trama

•          divisione in gruppi e stesura dei singoli capitoli

•          lettura comune dei capitoli ultimati

•          formazione di gruppi allargati per “aggiustare il tiro” e concordare e coordinare sviluppo di azioni,     descrizione di personaggi…
